چکیده

We consider evolution of Knowledge Bases caused by a sequence of basic steps of acquisition of a new information, either consistent or inconsistent with the original system. To make this process comply with the Principle of Minimal Change, a special evidence metric is introduced for measuring distance between states of knowledge. Then a novel semantics of knowledge bases is developed suggested by the heuristics of weighted maximally consistent subsets . The latter is efficiently applied to the processes of consistent and inconsistent acquisition of knowledge, belief revision and contraction.

Horn Complements: Towards Horn-to-Horn Belief Revision

Horn-to-Horn belief revision asks for the revision of a Horn knowledge base such that the revised knowledge base is also Horn. Horn knowledge bases are important whenever one is concerned with efficiency—of computing inferences, of knowledge acquisition, etc. Horn-to-Horn belief revision could be of interest, in particular, as a component of any efficient system requiring large commonsense know...

Forgetting in Action

In this paper we develop a general framework that allows for both knowledge acquisition and forgetting in the Situation Calculus. Based on the Scherl and Levesque (Scherl and Levesque 1993) possible worlds approach to knowledge in the Situation Calculus, we allow for both sensing as well as explicit forgetting actions. This model of forgetting is then compared to existing frameworks. In particu...

Knowledge Change, Failure, Adaptation, and Evolution

The wealth of knowledge representations available on the web today under the form of ontologies will have to evolve because what they represent changes and our knowledge about it changes as well. From far away, the terms “change”, “adaptation” or “evolution” may seem interchangeable. We discuss their meaning under the light of different techniques which have been developed to cope with distribu...

Knowledge Base Revision in Description Logics

Ontology evolution is an important problem in the Semantic Web research. Recently, Alchourrón, Gärdenfors and Markinson’s (AGM) theory on belief change has been applied to deal with this problem. However, most of current work only focuses on the feasibility of the application of AGM postulates on contraction to description logics (DLs), a family of ontology languages. So the explicit constructi...
